In British Columbia, online casino gambling is legal on one site: PlayNow.com, run by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC). The Government of BC says gambling in the province is legal only when it is run by the provincial government, that BCLC manages all commercial gambling including online, and that PlayNow.com is the only legal online gambling site in B.C. You must be 19 or older and located in BC to play. There is no licence for private online casinos in BC, so an offshore site, whatever licence it shows, is not one of the province’s authorized sites. Since April 13, 2026, all gambling in BC has been regulated by the Independent Gambling Control Office (IGCO).

Who runs and who regulates online gambling in BC?

  • BCLC runs it. The provincial Crown corporation manages all commercial gambling in BC, including online gambling through PlayNow.com.
  • IGCO regulates it. The Government of BC says the IGCO regulates all gambling in British Columbia. It replaced the former Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch (GPEB) under the modernized Gaming Control Act, which came into force on April 13, 2026. If you see GPEB named on an older page, that body has been replaced.

The legal frame comes from the Criminal Code. Section 207(1)(a) makes it lawful for a provincial government, alone or with another province, to conduct and manage a lottery scheme in that province under provincial law. BC uses that paragraph through BCLC.

What is PlayNow.com?

PlayNow describes itself as the official gaming site for residents of British Columbia, operated by BCLC and available only to players located in BC. The Government of BC sets the minimum age at 19 for all gambling in the province, online included.

PlayNow’s live casino publishes a rules document for each table. Its Live Blackjack uses 8 decks with the dealer standing on soft 17 and pays 3:2; its Live French Roulette applies La Partage on even-money bets; it also lists Live Baccarat and Live Craps. Limits for most live tables are shown only inside the game.

How do deposits and withdrawals work on PlayNow?

PlayNow’s help pages give the payment rules:

  • Deposits: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Interac e-Transfer, PayPal, Online Bill Payment and Web Cash, with a minimum deposit of C$5. BCLC does not charge deposit fees, though some card issuers and banks may. A first Interac e-Transfer may be held up to 72 hours by a bank security check.
  • Withdrawals: paid to the player’s bank account by Electronic Funds Transfer. BCLC asks players to allow up to three business days to process a withdrawal, after which it typically takes about one business day to reach the bank account. Withdrawals should consist of winnings; unused deposits can be refunded to the original payment method.
  • Balances: an account balance above C$250,000 must be reduced within 72 hours.

Support is by live chat and by phone. PlayNow’s contact page lists phone support and GameSense Advisors daily from 7 am to midnight Pacific time at 1-877-706-6789.

What about offshore sites?

The Government of BC’s position is plain: PlayNow.com is the only legal online gambling site in B.C. BC does not license private online casinos. An offshore site may show a licence from Curaçao, Malta, Kahnawà:ke, Anjouan or Tobique, but none of these is a BC authorization, and BC keeps no list of authorized private operators because it authorizes none. What each of those licences covers is explained on our page about Curaçao, Anjouan and Tobique licences.

For players, the Criminal Code’s text is the starting point. Section 207(3) makes it an offence to do anything for a lottery scheme not authorized under section 207, and lists participation as an offence punishable on summary conviction. We did not find data on enforcement against players in BC, and this page is not legal advice.

The BC tools described below, Game Break and GameSense, are BCLC’s own programs and apply to PlayNow.

Is PlayNow the same in Manitoba and Saskatchewan?

The name and platform are shared, but the operators are not. In Manitoba, Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries has offered PlayNow since January 2013 under a service contract with BCLC, for registered, confirmed Manitoba residents of the age of majority. In Saskatchewan, the Government of Saskatchewan says PlayNow.com is managed by SaskGaming, operated by the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority, regulated by the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority and built on BCLC’s platform, for players aged 19 and older. Each serves its own province. Our province-by-province reference lists the regulator and government site in every province.

Self-exclusion and help

PlayNow lists Game Break as BCLC’s self-exclusion program, and its Game Break page directs players to the Customer Support Center at 1-866-815-0222 to reach a GameSense advisor. Gambling Support BC runs a free 24/7 helpline for BC residents at 1-888-795-6111, which connects callers to a navigator and free counselling. The same number appears on PlayNow’s own pages, and the Gambling Support BC site is linked from the Government of BC’s gambling page. Our responsible gambling page lists help lines for other provinces.

What we could not confirm

  • The durations Game Break offers: they were not shown on the page as we viewed it.
  • Limits at PlayNow’s live blackjack, roulette, baccarat and craps tables: shown only inside the game.
  • How the IGCO handles individual player complaints about PlayNow: not part of the sources we read.

Check a site yourself

If you are in BC, the check is short: the provincial site is PlayNow.com, operated by BCLC. A site at any other address is not one of BC’s authorized online gambling sites, whatever licence or “Canada-friendly” claim it shows. If you live in another province, check that province’s own site and rules; the provincial frameworks section covers them.
