The legal age for casino gambling in Ontario is 19, both online and in land-based casinos. OLG states that casinos and slot facilities in Ontario are restricted to people 19 and over, and iGaming Ontario says you must be 19 or older for all internet gaming products it conducts and manages. The exceptions are lottery and charitable gaming, which OLG makes available from 18. On OLG.ca, an 18-year-old can open an account and buy draw-based lottery tickets online, but casino-style games need age 19. Online, you must also be physically located in Ontario when you play.

How old do you have to be to play online casino games in Ontario?

Nineteen, on every regulated site. Three official sources say the same thing:

  • iGaming Ontario says you must be 19 or older to take part in all internet gaming products it conducts and manages.
  • iGO’s directory of regulated sites states that players must be 19+ and physically located in Ontario to play on the sites it lists.
  • The AGCO’s Registrar’s Standards for Internet Gaming, standard 3.01, make anyone under 19 ineligible to play on Ontario igaming sites, except an 18-year-old who is using the site only to buy a lottery ticket.

That exception is the only one. An 18-year-old cannot play online slots, table games or live dealer games on a regulated Ontario site.

What is the age for land-based casinos?

Also 19. OLG’s site states that casinos and slot facilities in Ontario are restricted to persons 19 years of age and over, while lottery and charitable gaming products are available to persons 18 and over. Charitable gaming centres and lottery retailers therefore follow a different age from casinos, and the casino floor follows the same 19 as online casino play.

Why can an 18-year-old open an OLG.ca account?

Because OLG.ca sells more than casino games. Its player agreement says account holders must be at least 18, which lets 18-year-olds buy draw-based lottery tickets online. Pay-to-play games, play-for-free games and online horse racing need age 19. In practice, an 18-year-old OLG.ca account holder can buy lottery tickets but cannot play the online casino, and cannot play its free versions either.

Does iGO’s rule cover OLG.ca?

Not directly, but the age is the same. The AGCO states that iGaming Ontario does not conduct or manage online gaming at OLG.ca, which OLG offers itself. OLG.ca’s age rules therefore come from its own player agreement, quoted above, rather than from iGO’s FAQ. For casino-style games the result is identical: 19 on OLG.ca and 19 on every site in iGO’s directory. The difference is only at 18, where OLG.ca allows an account for lottery tickets.

What about sports betting and other online products?

iGO’s 19+ rule covers all internet gaming products it conducts and manages, whatever the product, on every site in its directory. On OLG.ca, online horse racing needs age 19, the same as its casino games. Lottery is the one product an 18-year-old can buy online in Ontario, through OLG.ca or, under AGCO standard 3.01, through a regulated site used only to buy a lottery ticket.

Does the age change if you are visiting from another province?

No. The rule follows where you play, not where you live. A visitor from Alberta or Quebec, where the minimum is 18 for regulated online play, still needs to be 19 to play at an Ontario casino or on an Ontario online casino. The reverse also applies to location: iGO says you can open or access an account with a regulated Ontario operator while outside Ontario, but you cannot place wagers unless you are physically in Ontario.

Ages across the country are not uniform. Officially, Alberta sets 18 for regulated online play, the Quebec government site shows 18+, and British Columbia and Saskatchewan set 19. Manitoba’s PlayNow requires players to be of the age of majority; the document we read does not state the number. Our province-by-province reference lists each province and the sources.

What do Ontario operators have to check?

Two AGCO standards matter here. Standard 3.01 defines who is eligible, with the under-19 rule above. Standard 3.02 requires operators to detect and keep monitoring a player’s location, block attempts to play from an unverified location, and detect software that tries to get around location detection. Every regulated site displays the iGaming Ontario and BetGuard logos, according to iGO, so you can tell whether these standards apply to the site in front of you. Our page on who regulates online casinos in Ontario explains the AGCO’s role.

Does the age apply to self-exclusion too?

Yes, for BetGuard, Ontario’s central self-exclusion tool. BetGuard’s FAQ says you must be 19 or older to use it, with a valid government photo ID, a permanent Canadian or US address, a cell phone and an email address. Our guide to self-exclusion and support in Ontario covers how it works.

What we could not confirm

  • How each operator verifies age at sign-up: the AGCO standards set the eligibility rule, but the verification steps of individual sites were not part of our sources.
  • Age rules for specific land-based venues beyond OLG’s statement on casinos and slot facilities.

Check before you sign up

Look at two lines in a site’s terms or footer: the minimum age and the location requirement. On a regulated Ontario site, both should say 19+ and physically in Ontario. Then look for the iGaming Ontario and BetGuard logos and search the site in iGO’s directory. If a site invites anyone under 19 in Ontario to play casino games, it is not following the rules that apply to regulated Ontario operators.
